If time travel were possible, what would you do? Where would you go? Why did you choose to visit there? If you were to go back in time, would you worry about how one small change could affect the future?

If time travel was actually possible I would be down to go view what has happened and how it has shaped the world that we live in today. I would choose to go all the way back to the pre-historic era when dinosaurs ruled the world. Then travel through each time period to view how things happened and how the people who we study in books actually made an impact in the world. In my time travel, I would not want to be able to change anything that has already happened. I would only want to view the actual moments and kind of just be a “fly on the wall”. I would not want to affect the outcome of the world we live in today. I would also like to go into the future and see what life will be like, specifically my own and my friends that I know share similar aspirations as I do.

This week’s topic of the week is in honor of Valentine’s Day. This day of romance has been celebrated for years and there are many theories as to how this day of love got its start. What are some of the best and worst gifts you have received on Valentine’s Day? When you receive something you don’t particularly like, do you let the giver know? If so, how?

From a public relations standpoint, if you worked for a greeting card company, florist or chocolate manufacturer, how would you persuade the public to buy from you rather than your competition?

______________________________________

Valentine’s Day is a day that I have always chose to spend with friends and that’s probably because I have never had a boyfriend during this time but, the one time I did in high school, it was the worst experience ever. He gave me a pretty big red bear that read Happy Valentine’s Day. I was so excited about it until I read the card attached to the bear that made it the worst gift ever. The card was written to another girl and not me and I was furious so, I cut the head off and threw it away. He was very aware that I was displeased with it and we broke up. Now, I hate those bears and never ask to receive them anymore.

From a public relations standpoint, I would offer the public a sale on greeting cards by selling the cards for half price that didn’t sale last year. That way the people would buy the cards because they were cheaper and I would sale more cards.

Also I am annoyed by people who are overly happy! There’s is no reason why you so chipper ALL THE TIME. Another pet peeve of mine is people talking to me that do not know me and attempt to hold personal conversations with me, I don’t want to learn your life story on the first encounter. For these reasons I stay anti-social to keep myself away these pet peeves. But once I get to know someone I love to learn about them but not from the start.

Throughout the innovations that are occurring in the world, new creations change the face of everything. Blogging has become a new face in the education field. Before this semester, I was not a part of the blogging world. I thought it was a really tedious process that was for people who had too much to say. Since, this Intro to Public Relations class, I have gotten more into blogging and even enjoy reading others blogs and getting to know their opinions on different subjects. My experience overall has been interesting and I like see myself joining the blog world. Also, the fact that I am a Public Relations major and many of my classes now expect blogging to me a part of the curriculum is real interesting and helps to show how the world and the field is changing, expanding and becoming more connected. After this semester and throughout the rest of my tenure here, I can see me continually blogging for school, personal, and even job purposes. Blogging is something that has transformed into a normal way of expressing opinions and giving information to the public so, I see the blogging still being around in years to come and even evolving into something bigger than it is now.

When reviewing a job announcement on prcrossings.com, many of the basic requirements that may be needed for were not mentioned directly. However, from reading the post, it is obvious that certain skills will be needed to ensure that you a capable for the job. Writing skills are a key component in pursuing a job in this field. You would need to be able to write press releases, fact sheets, and even news stories but, also have the ability to create press kits and even design websites. With the world of public relations changing, versatile skills are need. Some of these skills I believe I will obtain in class that are provided at Georgia Southern because as of now I really don’t have any of these skills perfected or at a level of comfort. Also I believe that experience is the best teacher. An internship would allow me to learn certain skills that I lack as well. On hand experience is essential for me as a learner. I also saw on summerinternships.com, that there are offers to allow me to achieve some of this experience I want to receive. With school and hopefully an internship soon I will be prepared to apply for public relations positions in the world.

The last couple of movies I saw in theaters were mostly advertise through television and word of mouth. No posters, newspaper or magazine advertisement. According to MSP Business Management, “Word of Mouth Marketing doesn’t cost a thing and it can have a huge impact on your business.” Word of Mouth in my opinion, is the best way to advertise because people base their opinions on their friends or people that they know opinions. This is because you and your friends have similar taste and preferences. I know personally if my friends like something, I’m bound like it as well.

I do not think that traditional public relations and advertising should be dismissed. Traditional methods were what started the foundation of all the other methods so, they cannot be dismissed. Its like the bicycle was first invented, no one stopped using it after motor vehicles were made. These are just the advancements. This analogy applies to advertising. According to managementhelp.org, advertising is the best way to repeatedly get a message out.

I know that from personal experience I love to see how different competitors attempt to to persuade existing and possible new customers. This particular Sprint commercial shows how their competitors are not better than them. They persuade customers by showing the flaws in their competitors AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Sprint shows that their service works through all of these other competitors. This is how I believe the commercial is effective because it attempts to show other sides of the competition. And because the commercials were so convincing to I recently became a Sprint customer.

Factors that are highlighted in the commercial that helps to show that their is persuasion relevant. The bandwagon technique can be seen because it implicates that everyone wants the to join because they are seen as the best. So by showing it in this light they are seen as if everyone should join them. And they also you the card stacking method by different facts and data to build their case and make it seem as if it was the best. But they could also be withholding information and mislead their audience by showing their competitors in a negative light to make a particular decision.

Public Relations itself is a field that is often misunderstood. Many do not understand the jobs that are a part of this field. Often publicity is thought what most people think public relations is just publicity. “Publicity is one aspect of public relations. Often referred to as free media, the goal of publicity is to get attention in online and traditional media.” An example of this would be if a television show shows a product on it and then people start buying the product. This is shown negatively on the hit television reality show, Jersey Shore, when the Situation wore the label, Abercrombie and Fitch, and the brand got negative publicity from him wearing them so the brand paid him to stop wearing the brand.

Publicity is one aspect of Public Relations. Public Relations is viewed as a process that uses, research, action, communication, and evaluation. PR requires skills that are more than just press releases. Public Relations is more extensive. An example if a charity commissions a public relations agency to create an advertising campaign to raise money to find a cure for a disease. This project would call for press releases and conferences and other things of the sort.

According to the PRSA website, public relations is defined as by stating, “Public relations helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other.” As well, the book, Think Public Relations defines public relations as a process that uses, research, action, communication, and evaluation. When it comes to the relationship between public relations and journalism, journalism is very similar in some aspects. These two fields both require writing, interviewing, and good timing skills. But public relations incorporate journalism, not vice verse. Public relations and journalism both relate messages to the public. However, the book, Think Public Relations states, “Journalists are objective observers, public relations personnel are advocates.” Public relations personnel use journalists. PR personnel write press releases that are given to journalist to create new stories. With the use of journalism, PR agencies can even “plant stories to present their clients in a certain light. This helps the PR agencies become better advocates for their clients, create well established relationships and then eventually create more business for themselves.

In my opinion, journalism is not at its demise, but it is merging into the public relation field. All of it coincides with one another. That’s how and why many journalist merge into the public relation field.
